CMPD Goes Street Slang To Battle Drug Overdoses

CMPD goes all in on their new anti drug campaign that draws upon slang phrases like “no cap” and “sus” to target the message to younger individuals and their families.

Cedar's Take:

I'm up for whatever helps, as long as if it doesn't work let's not wait to shitcan the concept and go back to busting heads and locking up drug dealers.

According to CMPD the main goal is to prevent overdose deaths through education and to spark conversations within an impressionable audience that is unaware of the prevalence and risks of fentanyl-laced drugs. The social media hashtag for this campaign is #StreetPillsKill.

In 2023, CMPD has reported a 20% increase in confirmed fatal overdoses compared to this time in 2022, totaling 179 deaths. The majority of these deaths (60%) are individuals under 40-years-old.

CMPD’s campaign includes printed and digital materials with various slang phrases coupled with statistics and warnings for Charlotte citizens. Resources, tips for parents and a list of secured drop box locations for people to safely dispose of drugs is listed at street-pills-kill.com. The drop-off locations include CMPD headquarters at 601 East Trade Street, the Matthews Police Department and the UNC Charlotte Police Department, as well as many local pharmacy locations.

So far in 2023, CMPD’s Vice Unit has seized approximately 75 pounds of suspected fentanyl. CMPD will continue to make drug seizures and target criminals who are making and distributing dangerous counterfeit pills. However, the Department needs the public’s help to understand the risks and dangers and to protect themselves and their loved ones from making fatal mistakes.

  3. 1512: My car had an accident on Brookshire and it took the officer 2 hours to respond. They only had 2 people on the shift that night. They aren’t going to care about a vacant car on the freeway. Life safety is the primary concern right now. Property crime is a back row priority. Did you remember your 9pm lock up routine?

  4. Charlotte is a very green city. There are many recyclers who are making good on scarce resources. My fleet of trucks has had the lead batteries recycled several times on Statesville Rd. And catalytic converters are turned in before the primary metal can poison the earth. Keep Charlotte green.

  5. The city has a police department PIO that won’t answer questions from the media, puts out minimal pressers, and in general dicks around. They want to produce video shorts and come up with snappy campaigns …trying to win awards and recognition while drugs, crime, crimes driven by drug seeking behaviors steadily increase. It’s time the city media take a long look at CMPD admin, what’s happening with all the DCs, executive officers and the like? Are we comfortable with the crime numbers they publish… and don’t forget the massive amounts spent on technology for real time crime, and other areas…where are the results? What are the checks and balances ….. we heard all about customer service but not about what is being done to address crime.

  6. When understaffed CRU’s are disbanded, DA’s decriminalize drug possession crimes, and a whole generation of new officers aren’t taught how to proactively target offenders, it falls to the PIO’s office to beat the war drums of drug overdose deaths. Sure wish there were things like jail, diversion programs, or court-ordered treatment to maybe save a few lives. But this works too no cap frfr

  9. Bet me one the officers gets offered up as a sacrifice to the media? Why isn’t anyone asking “why didn’t she comply?” Had she simple followed commands, I assure you this wouldn’t be an issue. But now, the inhabitants know all they have to do is struggle a bit and not follow a lawful commmand. I’ll also bet you a dozen donuts the City get sued, and settles out of court. Hell, I’ll bet you TWO DOZEN donuts. Of course nobody will lay blame at the woman they arrested. Of course, she did nothing wrong….lol.

  10. I worked with a cop that punched a woman in the face for shoplifting at a grocery store. All he got was a write up. It’s sad how things have changed around herešŸ«„.

  11. I keep saying it, but yall keep ignoring the warnings.... HIDEY HOLE! Stay in it and you won't be the next news story. Your check will never decrease. But if you end up being the star at 6 it could certainly be gone. I'm betting that there will be a sacrificial lamb or two served up on this little beat down over a doobie. Yall will eventually learn that no one wants us "Policing" these days. That's why we are issued a vehicle to drive. To stay warm and cozy while in your hole!

  13. Many May remember the Jon Dunham UOF incident back in 2017. Synopsis of that incident- lengthy foot chase after traffic stop and jump and run- caught on camera officers struggling to get James Yarborough handcuffed with one or both hands under his body and Officer Dunham had his gun drawn and up against the resisting suspect’s head stated something to the effect of “I will kill you”. Chief Putney did something brilliant around that same time frame. Members of the local media came out to the academy. With media cameras rolling and about three male members of the media were tasked with handcuffing the smallest female recruit in the Academy at that time. Awesome, eye-opening, great strategic move by Chief Putney. He then spoke to the media. Reality- it’s not like TV where the smallest female cop on the tv show tackles and quickly handcuffs the muscular male suspect. Would love to see those old media clips reappear or perhaps that scenario set up again. Being in law enforcement is hard in today’s current climate, and too often the media fails to play it straight and accurate, instead helps push those with their own “social agenda”.
