The Killing Continues

Happy Boxing Day!

From the local paper:

A homicide reported in northwest Charlotte on Christmas Eve is the second high-profile act of gun violence this year on a residential street that is scarcely two blocks long, investigators say.

Few details have been released by police about the latest shooting, including the identity of the victim. The killing happened around 11 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of Flagler Lane. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and found someone with gunshot wounds in a vehicle. The victim died at the scene, police say.

Details about a suspect, or additional information about the case, have not been released.

The shooting comes nine months after a 13-year-old boy was wounded when someone sprayed the family’s Flagler Lane home with gunfire, CMPD reported. He survived after being taken to a local hospital with a bullet wound to the leg, officials said. The boy’s mother and two other children were in the home when the shots were fired around 1:30 a.m. on March 24, CMPD said. “At least 10” shots were fired, the paper reported in March.

Charlotte's year to date homicide number is somewhat disputed with one week until the end of the year the number should remain below 100.

As of Wednesday December 27, 2023 the body count stands at 81 including justified.

Cedar Note:

I was actually thinking of mocking "Boxing Day" when I pulled the latest homicide story from the local paper.

To be clear I've always been a fan of Muhammad Ali. His appearance at the opening ceremony at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta where he refused defeat or pity as a victim of parkinson's to a flight on USAir out of Charlotte a few year's prior.

But it was the March 1971 fight that cast Ail as "the greatest" forever. UK Columnist Frank Keating put it in perspective back in 2011:

After 14 rounds at dead-level even, both warriors were spent. Well almost, for Frazier at the very last bent low at center-stage and came up with, well, the kitchen sink … an exquisitely timed rock-knuckled left hook of bestial accuracy which smashed into Ali's jaw so grievously that the right side of the big man's face was wonkily out of shape even before the back of his burgundy trunks hit the floor and the little flamboyant red tassels on his boots waved limply up at the ring lights.

The Big Mouth had been shut good and proper. Over and out. The passing Ali legend had, surely, now passed.

What happened in the next few moments, however, was, utterly to confound and rout Ali's enemies and, overwhelmingly, to recharge and reward his believers. He got up. He lived. And so did the legend grow.

By miraculously clawing himself to his feet and attempting to mount a counterattack, the stricken Ali – loser, but still champ – had, in fact, won everything. For eternity. Whatever was to come, that finale in New York settled Ali's imperishable place in history.

  2. I guess we can assume that CMC ER facilities kept the murder count below 100…

  3. Homicides continue to be way up, but once they juke the numbers by removing the justifieds, you’re left with what ought to be appropriately called the “murder rate”

  4. Let the hood rats continue to thin the herd. DA, courts aren’t doing the job, Let Ray-Ray and Lil’ Peep handle it. Eventually you can’t twist and distort facts or numbers. Same thing happened with the Hidden Valley Kings when we didn’t have a gang problem.

  6. I'm with ya Cedar Ali was indeed the greatest! I never understood why more young people didn't understand the value in the man as a role model.

  7. Ali was a Conscientious Objector which is a legal status granted to many US Citizens during the VietNam War. However draft boards in both Texas and Kentucky denied this Conscientious Objector status and he was convicted of felony refusal which was later overturned on appeal. So no more a draft dodger than Trump or George Bush who served in the National Guard. Other famous draft dodgers Bill Clinton, DIck Cheney, Chevy Chase, and Rush Limbaugh.

Carter gave pardons and amnesty to all in 1977.

  9. I remember watching Fox News during the riots and Megyn Kelly was like…”this is obviously a poorly trained department” . I looked closer and the camera had Kimble pointing at cops that were just standing there. SMH..she threw Kimble under the bus on national TV which is just wrong.

    1. Reply:He put people in jobs to wreck the future years like Bryley. Look at the downtown area and surrounding apartment complexes. I just read a fascinating article about the Willows in University City. They complain of gun shots every night and don’t understand the underlying causes. Why can’t the captain figure out who is doing it?

    2. That's your job son, captains are way smarter than you and have more important things to attend to.

  11. Rodney Monroe did everything short of running the department into the ground. His race based promotional policies will haunt CMPD for years. Meanwhile he did show a lot of peoples true colors when the gloves came off and you did as you were ordered no questions asked… and have a cup of grape kool-aid and follow…. It was amazing to see people just fold up their spines and jump on the wagon. How much time was waisted on com-stats and com-stat related work. No wonder Rodney didn’t last in the private sector.

    1. CFD has adopted a similar management strategy, but unfortunately, morale has taken a significant hit, resulting in a high than usual turnover rate. Since July 1, 2022, there has been a mass exodus with nearly 50 employees leaving in 2023, with a projected dozen more leaving within the next 30 to 60 days. This rapid decline shows no signs of slowing down, and it's imperative to address the root cause. Key leadership figures, including the Chief, the new Deputy of Operations, and another Deputy who likes to sleep with friend’s wives, need to be reassessed. Their leadership styles and the Chiefs completely incompetence have contributed negatively to the organization, and there's a strong consensus that many other candidates with far better qualifications, respect, and leadership skills were overlooked during their selection. It's crucial to make changes at the top to reverse this downward trajectory and restore confidence within the team.

  13. CMPD implemented a rule of “never appoint or promote someone smarter than you” .

That logic leads towards mistakes and corruption in the long run as we can clearly see.

  16. I say we give the thug hood rats Romare Bearden Park. Surround it with steel shipping containers and charge admission. Charlotte’s own Thunderdome. Braxton can be Master Blaster. “Two men enter, one man leaves!” We can call it Roar Field or Prowl Park to get Tepper and Charlotte City Council to buy in. This City has gone to shit and is joke to those who dare peal back the curtains. Tepper’s latest stunt is a perfect illustration of that. Jerry Richardson would have been caught doing that. Tepper is a rich baby throwing a tantrum with an entitlement problem. Thunderdome 2024!!
