Serious Question for CMPD

I'm going to bump this up a little.

"If you don’t sign this petition then I never want to hear any of you complain ever again about anything at CMPD. If a majority of your colleagues want to bring about much-needed change at the department and you decide not to help in their fight, then don’t speak another word about your grievances. We don’t care to hear them because we know you won’t stand with your brothers and sisters on a simple issues like true employee wellness."

So, what are your thoughts? 

Personally I don't buy into the "scary" tactical look or unprofessional aspect of the argument against switching to outer carrier vests. I see no merit to the "public will be intimidated" complaint either.

I get it Police Offices won't look the same or will they? Kinda hard to say given the photo above. But even if they do look different to some people sadly Police work is not the same as it was even ten years ago. Today's duty belt is crazy heavy and who knows what kind of additional weapons command will want you to carry around next. 

I'm not active duty so I have no skin in the outcome of this issue.

So you tell me.

File this under Mom's Gonna Be Pissed - Avery Sehorn Arrested

According to local media, the daughter of actress Angie Harmon and ex-NFL star Jason Sehorn has been arrested after being accused of breaking into a Charlotte night club.

Harmon's daughter, 18-year-old Avery Sehorn, was arrested after police say she and two others broke into World Night Club on Music Factory Boulevard.

One of the club owners said that Sehorn and two 17-year-old boys broke in through a back door, then hid behind his bar and drank his liquor.

According to the warrant, the trio is accused of stealing six bottles of liquor worth $500 last Thursday. The owner says one of his cleaning crews caught them. He says the teens ran off but were caught by police shortly after.

Social media posts show Avery graduated from Charlotte Christian School on June 2nd. She is set to attend the University of Alabama this fall.

A post on People Mag's website states:

"On Sunday, June 2, the actress, 51, shared a post in honor of her daughter Avery Grace, 18, who graduated from high school."

The post goes on to add: “We are all immensely proud of you Avery!,” Harmon wrote in her Instagram caption as she posed alongside her three daughters Avery, Finley Faith, 20, and Emery Hope, 15, who she shares with her ex-husband Jason Sehorn.

The club owner says surveillance video of what happened does exist, but he doesn’t plan to release it.

 

I'm Not Crunk! Marion MacPhail

Marion Ayliffe MacPhail had big Friday night in Charlotte. Too bad it ended with her being "Cuffed and Stuffed" just after midnight and then transported to the Mecklenburg County Intake Center.

She finally checked in around 0700 but after a short nap was on her way home to Greensboro around 1100 on Saturday Morning.

Charges include Driving While Impaired, Assault on a Government Official and Resisting. 

More details as provided by our vast and wide ranging "field agents".

Another Uptown Shooting? And Then Another? Plus One More?

Reports by local media say that was a shooting in Uptown Charlotte early Saturday morning that left four people injured.

The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. outside of a business on N. Tryon Street, near W. 10th Street.

Police said one victim had life-threatening injuries, while the other three victims only sustained non-life threatening injuries.

All four victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment, according to police.

Police said initial reports indicate that an argument occurred before a man went to his car, retrieved a gun, returned to the area, and started shooting.

That man then left the scene before officers arrived, according to police.

The second shooting happened around 5 a.m. on East Trade Street near South College Street. Medic said one person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries from that incident.

Meanwhile hours earlier outside of uptown, another person was shot in northeast Charlotte on Ryan Jacobsen Drive, in the Pavilion Village apartment complex off North Tryon Street. That person also sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Medic.

It is unclear what led up to the East Trade Street or Ryan Jacobsen Drive shootings, or if anyone has been arrested in connection to the incidents.

Kylie Nicole Mast Let's Get Ready To Rumble!

 

It seems that the BF of the rather diminutive Kylie Mast was worried he'd end up like John Bobbit at the hands and knife of former wife Lorena Bobbitt.

Perhaps being nick named "Stubby" wasn't something the perhapes now ex Lucas was interested in and so he filed a complaint against Ms. Mast for misdemeanor domestic violence and the Cornelius Police Department was happy to transport her to Garry McFadden's Mecklenburg County Hilton.

She has since been released but no word on court date or if the charges will be dismissed.

Cedar Update: Advice to Ms. Mast, you can do far better than a guy who calls the cops on you after all a girl who likes golf deserves a second, third, fourth and more chance. You need a good lawyer to get this case dismissed and your record cleared via court order. Need a name hit me up. 

Kayrin English Sentenced to 24 Months Incarceration for Gun Trafficking

Kayrin English, 27, of Charlotte, was sentenced on May 30, 2024 to 24 months in prison followed by one year of supervised release for dealing in firearms without a license, announced Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Bennie Mims, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Charlotte Field Division, joins U.S. Attorney King in making today’s announcement.

According to court records and today’s sentencing hearing, ATF agents learned that between February 2020 and August 2021, English had applied for 36 firearm purchase permits. ATF agents also learned that in September 2021, English had applied for an additional seven firearm purchase permits. ATF agents approached English when she arrived to collect the seven permits and conducted a consensual interview. During the interview, English told ATF agents that she would generally obtain the permits and use them to purchase firearms, which she would then resell for profit to individuals who were prohibited from owning or purchasing their own firearms. 

Court records show that English admitted to ATF agents that, since January 2021, she had illegally sold approximately 15 to 20 firearms. English also told ATF agents that most of the illegal firearms transactions were local, however, she had previously travelled to New Jersey where she sold several firearms she had purchased in Charlotte.

On October 31, 2023, English pleaded guilty to dealing in firearms without a license. She is currently released on bond and will be ordered to report to the federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.

The ATF led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfredo De La Rosa, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte, prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

Cedar's Take:

Easy money. English was likely not acting alone. This sort of underground black market trade of weapons is widespread and problematic. Perhaps she was just an enterprising woman trying to make ends meet? Maybe she was just dumb enough to listen to someone who said easy money. This is of course a cultural problem. Those of us who are 2nd Amendment supporters need to push for more of this accountability. 24 Months seems sort of steep for someone with no priors so I'd suspect there is more to this story.

Yet consider this the only "local news" to report this action was WCCB. Their viewership numbers are barely visible, so it likely doesn't matter that they reported the news this way:

"U.S. Attorney Dena King sentenced 27-year-old Kayrin English to two years in prison and one year of supervised release for dealing in firearms without a license."

Of course ADA's don't sentence offenders judges do. 

The work of ATF in getting guns out of the hands of kids and violent offenders is much needed. Federal Judges don't take kindly to weapons violations. Had this action been in Mecklenburg County Court System English would have received community service or less.

Street Take Overs and General Disorder - Charloot!

Local News Media pointing to videos circulating on social media from this weekend showed cars doing burnouts in Uptown Charlotte and another street takeover in NoDa . Someone was even hurt in the process, MEDIC said.

The videos show large crowds watching the drivers during the stunts. At least two vehicles were doing donuts in the intersection in front of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the videos showed.

In the above video MEDIC said someone was hit by a car around 2 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of 36th and North Davidson streets. That victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, MEDIC said. 

Volume up for the distinctive "thud" followed by the collective "ooooohh" from the crowd. 

That incident happened in front of Fire Station 7. (We do hope the victim will be ok). 

Charlotte Fire said at the same time in the same location, one of their engines was involved in crash. It wasn’t a serious accident.

One video shows a different vantage point of the NoDa takeover. A coupe is seen drifting counter-clockwise around the intersection, and then it goes back the other way. On its second pass, a man recording with his phone crouches down before he’s hit by the coupe on video.

CMPD has remained silent regarding the incidents and the name of the one injured spectator has not been release. No arrests have been made and as with other street takeovers CMPD response was rather muted despite plenty of advance promotion of the locations, dates and times via social media.
