The City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and CMPD honor our fallen Police Officers in many ways.
One of those is Officer Robert L. Smith - EOW January 15, 1987.
A name and a date many of us were not aware of, from nearly forty years ago.
At the time Charlotte was a far different place. City leadership later felt that naming a park in his honor was a just and right thing to do.
The Richard L Smith Park located at 1604 Little Rock Road is in a growing area of Charlotte known by some as Paw Creek, and the area is rapidly changing.
Due partly to the success of The River District and the nearby White Water Center. Suddenly apartments and new homes are popping up everywhere.
In October of last year Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation announced plans to add "pickleball courts" to the park in addition to the already under construction Paw Creek greenway project.
The artist rendering of the property is awesome. But notably absent is any explanation of the Park's namesake or the small granite memorial and plaque in his honor located at the head of the parking lot.
The small memorial next the restrooms and picnic pavilion is in good shape, yet it could use a cleaning and the photo placed behind a small plastic cover and all but dissolved.
Asking about the park's construction progress both Park and Rec staff and Meck County Commissioners were quick to respond, but my follow up about the Officer Smith Memorial and photo was met with crickets.
I've offered that I have a duplicate photo and would be more than happy to step up to complete the simple task of replacing the photo.
Privately I'm told that both City and County elected officials and Park and Rec staff are somewhat bothered by the Park's name and apparently believe that the Fallen Officer Memorial Uptown across for the Law Enforcement center is the most suitable place to remember Officer Robert Smith and others.
While there is no formal action to rename the park or remove the memorial apparently they are concerned that my request to replace the faded photo might offend some members of the public.
CP has also offered to help with the replacement of the photo covered with plastic with perhaps a stainless steel "etched" photo or even a bronze cast image.
Thankfully on Thursday morning CP was hearing via the "back channel" CMPD Chief Estella D. Patterson had been made aware of the photo and the repair will be handled.
Additionally CP also heard from Mecklenburg Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell who as also expressed her concern.
Additional Background.
Police Officer Robert Louis Smith was shot and killed after he and other officers responded to a report of a man firing a gun into a condo complex at 0110 hours.
During the search for the suspect Officer Smith located him and shined his flashlight on him. When he did this the suspect opened fire with a rifle, striking Officer Smith four times. Other officers responded to the sound of the gun shots and returned fire, wounding the suspect.
The 32-year-old man was taken into custody and sentenced to life in prison plus 60 years, were he remains today.
Officer Smith had served with the Charlotte Police Department for seven years. He was survived by his wife, mother, sister, and two brothers.
He was off duty when he responded to the call.
Rest Easy Hero.
Cedar Update:
I want to thank a number of people working to address this issue. My hope that someone within CMPD, Meck County, FOP Lodge 9 will step up and fix this Officer's memorial. More ASAP.

So we know Stella’s husband sued the city for 400k, so that like hiring JJs wife to be the chief in a way. I don’t understand how people can do work at the LEC and not understand your situation.
ReplyDeleteStella’s husband is dumbass, and a cry baby. Horrible firefighter, terrible Captain, a perfect example of Peter Principle. Ask him what he did after he found out he failed the battalion chief exam. He cried and went home, claimed the written test was racist. Maybe it’s him? He’s one of the most racist people I’ve met.
DeleteMarcus Jones said the cops can ride the bus to work for free. He also removed a pay step from the end and put it at the front like cops are dumb.
DeleteHe must only talk to the dayshifters and CCs.
The only reason Roy Cooper didn't let his killer out of jail is because he is white.
ReplyDeleteHas this been fixed?
ReplyDeleteRemember us..next time you step to us.
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to see Major Ford actually come outside the office. I saw him at a bar..no beer..arms wrapped up..looking around..hunched over..nervous. Why go to a bar at all?? It’s like work for him just to sit there.
ReplyDeleteRookie that’s nothing! I seen it when two coworkers were afraid to enter a restaurant without another 2 coworkers walking in together as a unit. They got guns but stay in car until safe to enter? 😑🪿
Delete2342: bad things happen in Charlotte
Deletecops have always hated crowded locations and noise. its like going to the dentist. it creates a breach in social skills and community connections. i applaud any brass for going outside at night to try to live a normal life.
DeleteViolence and threats to life can lead towards depression and other illnesses. It’s nice to see the brass get outside and stay active. We know Stella hasn’t done street work in 20 years and counting.
DeleteThe path to peace is not isolation, it’s socialization and the arts. We should have more officers come out of hiding.
DeleteHow can be brave if you hide?
Delete7:39 SYBAU
Delete2312, bravery is trait not existent by many government employees. Its a system of orders and procedures conducted by mono-drone clones.
DeleteIt’s just a job. There are risks. Deal with it.
DeleteHe was not off duty at the time.
DeleteWas just curious so I drove by on Sunday. Nice park the photo has obviously disintegrated. Screw driver and a new photo is all it would take sad that Meck County doesn't give a damn.
ReplyDelete12:18 She's never done any actual roadwork. Just like the rest of them. They did just enough to get their check mark to add to their resume.
ReplyDeleteY'all need to remember that he, Officer Smith, actually did his job. Unlike a lot of you two year veterans who just want to drive fast, carry a gun, eat for free at McDonalds, and talk the part!
ReplyDeleteWhat are the code numbers up to now? 15000?
ReplyDeleteThey skipped over the 8 and 9 thousands. We're now at the 101xx...
DeleteAren't the 8k and 9k for contractors or temps?
DeleteIs the girl dude still on VCAT? The one that shot herself in the foot!
ReplyDeleteYou love her! You always talk about shim
DeleteOld shake a leg. Half yall woulda figured a way to take disability and work out your life with Piedmont Protective. She’s just dying to kill a bad guy. Happy for her to have my six. Just sucks academy can’t teach muzzle discipline
DeleteWe teach it, but you know how it goes
DeleteI will say CharLITT is exposing more insanity than Meckurbia these days. You think the city is quiet, and then..man set in fire on the freeway. Time to retire Cedar.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte does have better video evidence of the chaos and distruction.
DeleteWe are living in a DEI world. If you kill someone at CMPD then you go to prison. You either tolerate it or move along.
ReplyDeleteUnalived someone and haven't gone to prison. Guess I beat the odds, huh?
DeleteYes you did buddy!
DeleteSo how did the patrol get tipped over on the road? Tbone? Road bump?
ReplyDeleteYo, we at full capacity at Jail Central. It ain’t even Summer yet. We cannot cannot cannot take anymore inmates. You needs to start issuing citations and warnings until end of Summer.
ReplyDeleteSir you are a fucking laughingstock for going to work for that clown.
DeleteThat’s what I said about Ricky…
DeleteAs I sip my Sunday morning tea, I ponder if Cedar has the energy to compete with CHARLITT as the new source of uncensored news in town? Is Cedar finished for good like the sandwich shop owner?
ReplyDeleteMCSO is 46% female and that is dangerous. What if the hoodrats get out of the jail cells?
ReplyDeleteWe are 94% AA and CFD is heading that way, too.
DeleteThat’s the county ratio. Tax Ballyntyne and move the money to North Charlotte.
