On Saturday, May 3, at 11:00 a.m., officers responded to an accident with injury call for service in the 3600 block of Frew Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. MEDIC transported the victim to the Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center where the victim was pronounced deceased.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD and MEDIC also assisted.

Thursday, May 8, 2025 - The victim in this case has been identified as Kamorrie Prather, 18.

As a result of this continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have identified Keion Depina Brown, 20, and a 17-year-old juvenile male as suspects in the murder of Kamorrie Prather and obtained warrants for their arrests.
On Monday, June 2, 2025, the CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested Mr. Brown and the juvenile. After their arrests, Mr. Brown and the juvenile were transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) for interviews with detectives from CMPD’s Homicide Unit. Mr. Brown was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The juvenile was transferred into the custody of Cabarrus Juvenile Detention Facility.

On May 3, 2025 at approximately 1130 hrs, emergency medical services responded to the intersection of Frew Rd and Drury Dr in Charlotte NC 28206.
The call for service stated that there were two black males that ran from the car headed toward N. Tryon St; which is South from the incident location.
Charlotte Fire Department was first to arrive on scene. They located grey Dodge Challenger that had collided with fire hydrant.
They located the victim, Kamorrie Prather (DOB 08/24/06) in the driver's seat. He was the sole occupant.
When getting him out of the vehicle, they observed suspected gunshot wound to his chest. He was treated on scene and transported to the hospital. He was later pronounced deceased.
Homicide Detectives responded to the hospital and the scene.
At the hospital detectives observed suspected gunshot wound to the victim's upper right chest. His phone was collected with his belongings.
At the scene detectives observed the vehicle against the hydrant. It was facing East at the Northwest corner of he intersection of Frew Rd and Drury Dr. There were apparent tire marks, car parts and damaged road sign leading back to the 3500 block for Frew Rd.
Detectives spoke with several witnesses. One witness advised that they observed the Challenger parked on the road in the 3500 block of Frew Rd facing Drury Dr. They advised that there was black male in the passenger seat and another black male at the passenger door. They advised that they heard gunshots.
Another witness advised that they observed two black males run in between two buildings from the direction of the incident in the direction of N. Tryon St. They advised that one of them had handgun in his hand.
Detectives obtained surveillance footage from Drury Dr that had audio. Suspected gunshot(s) were heard at 1127 hrs.
Detectives conducted digital analysis of the phone collected from Prather. From the analysis, it was determined that Prather had been communicating with two individuals the morning of and immediately before his murder via Instagram.
The defendant's messages with the victim consist of the defendant sending the address of 3504 Frew Rd. The victim messaged he had arrived and for the defendant to come out and that he was on the street. The defendant liked that message at 1124 hrs.
