Vi Lyles "Uptown Charlotte is Safe" Unless Its 2 am and the Encore is closing.

Local media are calling it a "Mass Shooting at 300 North Church Street Charlotte".

The official statement from CMPD is less dramatic:

"Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 300 block of North College Street in the Central Division.

On Sunday, July 13, at 2 a.m., officers responded to reports of ^gun shots^ being fired in the 300 block of North College Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound. This subject was pronounced on the scene by MEDIC.

Three additional victims were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds by MEDIC and two additional victims self-transported.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence."

While CMPD's PIO gives the address at 300 North College Street the address for the Hive Night Club the crime scene tape was on the alley between QC Social and the parking deck at 200 East 6th Street.

Those who know Uptown clubs know that Encore Night Club ain't Whiskey River.

CMPD reported on Monday July 14, 2025, that the deceased employee of Encore was 37-year-old Arleigh Alexzander Bryant.

While Encore denied the shooting happened inside apparently an altercation started inside the club. There is no word in the altercation involved Bryant.

Both venues cater to the same crowd yet CMPD presence is zero when the clubs are open. Several uptown residents are shocked that CMPD doesn't have Officers on site nightly. Many these venues are given preferential treatment from both CMPD and Meck ABC.

And so it goes another life lost to gun violence and another 5 people with life altering injuries.

An area of Charlotte that once saw families enjoying events at Spirit Square, Discovery Place and the Belk Theater / Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Places where the only thing dramatic was the Phantom of the Opera and violence was limited to a fight between the cast members of Cats.

Ten victims of gun violence 3 homicides Uptown in the last 10 days, including a CMPD Officer.

Local news media reported late on Monday evening that CMPD had arrested two men in connection with the Uptown mass shooting, according to court documents.

Court records show CMPD arrested Damien Evans II, 25, and Shawn Cannon, 24.

Cannon is facing charges of Possession of Firearm by Felon, Possession of Stolen Firearm, Accessory after to Murder and Flee to Elude.

Damien Evans, II Photo Courtesy MCSO

Evans is charged with two counts of Possession of Firearm by Felon and Possession of Stolen Firearm.

Both are convicted felons with countless arrests. Most of the charges have been dismissed by the Meck County DA Spencer Merriweather.

Case Update July 18, 2025

As a result of the continued investigation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) detectives identified a 16-year-old juvenile suspect and obtained warrants for their arrest.

On Thursday, July 17, the Statesville Police Department encountered and arrested the suspect.

The juvenile is currently being held in the Alexander County Detention Facility and awaiting extradition to Charlotte.

The juvenile suspect is charged with Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder.

Additionally Damien Evans, and Shawn Cannon both remain in custody.

And y'all want to re-elect Vi Lyles?

Note: Yes I know gunshots is one word but if I quote the PIO release I'm obligated to quote it verbatim spelling errors included. Yes back in the day reporters and editors would put (sic) to indicate the error but no more (per the AP style guide).

  1. When you add "Malt Licka" to em and shake em up this is expected. Same thing happens to Gremlins when you feed them after midnight.

  2. That’s 3 straight weeks with shootings in uptown. What happened to our small town culture?

  3. I'd not go Uptown for anything unless it's midday and even then not unless I have to.

Panther's games only on Sunday afternoon. Knights games we are gone before dark. Hornets no way.

The darkness comes early Uptown. I'd be happy if baseball move back to Gold Hill Road.

  4. I’d love for someone to ask Vi about this and hold feet to the fire, no amount of police work or government programs, violence interrupter’s can fix this. guns combined with no impulse control . No daddy, no raising , no social cognitive functions, seemingly no grasp of the fundamental tenets of civilization this is what you have. How do you fix that?

  5. Cops are never around these clubs at night and you’d think they would have at least a couple uptown on the weekend. I guess they are just scared.

    1. Yeah. Scared smart. Issue tourniquets at the door. That’s problem solving there. I wonder who will get an award for that from the Chief, wherever he is these days.

  7. These places have flourished for decades. Eventually the owners get taken down (see King Richard’s). Some go on way past their life expectancy (see Onyx). If it lasts long enough, Charloot will want to preserve it (see Excelsior Club)
    Les plus changes…

  8. Why are these clubs allowed to remain open? This isn't the first time and won't be the last. At least make them hire off duty there should be a minimum of four on site every night.

  9. So a black dude with countless priors and a prison record doing time for armed robbery gets transitioned in the alleyway behind at club at 2 am. Pretty Good News to me!

  10. Some of us will tell our kids about the good old days. Like Epicenter before the plague. Just like my parents telling me about CMS before they got plagued. Nobody will believe us. It’s not all Vi’s fault, she’s just not doing anything to stop it.

    1. That makes it her fault. This is literally her job and what she signed up for.

    2. You must be kidding? Charlotte had a strong city manager who rules the day to day. Out mayor is more like an elected cheerleader. It’s like blaming the student body president when the school admin runs the school.
She is popular, she is effective at cheering in our virtues. Without her, naacp is not holding their conference as we speak. They are dropping hundreds of millions in Charlotte, raising the tide for all of us. Without her, the Panthers and Hornets may not be in Charlotte. With her continued fight, CIAA may be back where it belongs. Without her, Honeywell doesn’t move to Charlotte. Without her, there is no Charlotte FC. But for your day to day…look to Marcus Jones

      Go Vi go!

But hey, just kick the can down the road for a few days and this will all be forgotten until the next incident which he will blow off. Nice promotion JJ, you idiot!
