CMPD's Overtime Nightmare

Recently CMPD Command implemented a new directive to limit overtime within the department.

For taxpayers. it is another example knee jerk management rather than leadership and planning and just another example of wasteful spending and endless mismanagement.

But for Officers it is massive screw driver and a no-back hex-head stainless steel SCREW!.

As the FOP letter below outlines this new directive limits overtime to a maximum of 10 hours per seven-day work period and 20 hours with a fourteen-day work period.

The FOP letter also points out to declining morale, increased attrition to other agencies and a growing sense that for Officers, their well-being is over looked.

Interesting to know that the same staffing concerns voiced two and three years ago are being down played by Command saying that CMPD will soon be fully staffed. As Redford points out the "fully" is based on outdated figures from when Charlotte had fewer resident.

It also clearly discounts upcoming retirements and transfers to other agencies.

As CP has pointed out in the past CMPD is woefully understaffed. By comparison Boston PD has more than 2,200 sworn Officers and yet the city population is under 675,000 vs Charlotte's nearly 1,000,000 citizens. Which might explain Boston's 2024 homicide count of 36 vs Charlotte's 110.

FOP President Redford asks that the city and department either rescind the discretionary overtime policy or transition the Spectrum Arena Traffic Management to an off-duty payment system.

Most of us taxpayers are unaware of the role that over-time and secondary employment plays in the lives of our CMPD Officers. But for the vast number of these men and woman these "side gig" assignments offer additional pay that is needed to make ends met, keep the mortgage current, fund their retirement plan and hopefully pay for their kids education.

The other issue is when there's a lack of man power, the boots on the ground have to come from somewhere.

Finally the City gives a $305,000 payment to a butt hurt police chief, $1.5 million to fund a blacks only night club, $600 million to a billionaire football team owner with a losing team and $245 million for upgrades to the Spectrum Arena yet paying a CMPD Officer an extra $15 an hour for overtime sets command into panic mode. What is wrong with these people?

So how do you see it?

And one more thing..... Let's be careful out there.

  1. Overtime gets a bad name as if it is excessive spending for the same service, it is not. A listed hourly wage does not reflect the 33% in benefits attached to it. So overtime is costing the employer 17% more for an experience, well trained employee. A bargain with the silver lining it is boosting morale.

  2. My coworker almost died because he was working so much overtime. Live within your means and stop excessive spending. People live on $3 a day in Cuba.

  4. Off duty/Overtime were never designed to be an essential and required for an officer. Part of academy was having it explained to officers not to get into a situation where they depended on off duty money to meet their financial obligations. Yes the cost of living has increased, no raises aren’t as big but are season tickets to football games, beach homes, boats, lake homes, gun collections necessary for life. If you are living beyond your means that’s not the cities fault.

    1. Agreed! These greedy officers trying to pay for child care or are single income families are the problem!

  5. How to tank morale #305,001:

Tell officers that want to work OT that they can’t. Tell officers who are on a scheduled day off to come in and work for a billionaire’s sports team.

CMPD can’t stop stepping on its own balls.

    1. Keep in mind, if you call sick for an off duty job, that they forced upon you, on your scheduled day off, they can’t do a damn thing!

  6. Overtime will have to be permanently figured in to CMPD and CFD budgets. It will be a continual issue. They struggle to get enough for a recruit class. Gone are the days people stay 25-30 years. CMPD, like CFD has far more civil service firefighters in admin positions and not in the streets where they belong. They take from operations to fill admin positions and don’t back fill the positions.

  12. Sounds like a good lawyer can class action this and get all of us paid

Or we can all go to other depts and work those side gigs in Charlotte. And don’t bring this crap about lake houses. Half the folk I work with are taking discounted apartments in the hood or live out of jurisdiction. Charlotte is expensive, none of us are buying beach condos. Unless you got some scam which is going to increase since we are capped at 10/week

  21. Name someone beyond LT that is not a DEI hire supervising the DEI hires? The lack of street smarts is shocking. I know a lot of people like Jennings but he is not a leader. He never looked out for anyone but himself. Prove me wrong.

    1. response:

Major Ford has experience on the streets. He killed a guy and can do tacticool work.

Major Koch has experience in major events. He has recent fight experience with protesters. He is not afraid of cameras.

Captain Saunders has experience with reporting preparation for court. He has experience with officer involved shootings.

Captain Georgian has experience in IA firing bad officers, along with DWI cases prosecution.

Captain Colquitt has experience with PTO training and special unit supervisory duties. He was heavily involved with the recent officer death.

Captain Blow has significant experience with traffic enforcement and felony accident prosecution. He also has knowledge around policy violations and civil service board survival.

All good brass that can help you under certain circumstances. (Not DEI)

    2. Plus,

Major Fischbach has extensive experience with drug enforcement and investigation practices. He has gone undercover and lead teams for community conversations.

Major Tellis has been vital in our efforts to create relationships with the black community during violent crimes and public outcry. He has survived shootings and improved training procedures.

    3. Many of these men would be good DCs in the future. Politics would never allow it, even if the new Chief is from KC.

    4. Which is exactly why I offer the question. Why are we hiring a DEI Chief not from Charlotte. I don't agree with much of Jennings dealings. But at least he unlike Monroe made an effort. I can't forgive the traffic vest and Chick Fil A stupidity but it could be so much worse as Monroe showed us.

    5. 1514hours,

You can’t hire internally after the last 8 years. It’s like hiring Putney and Jennings cronies goons.

A new chief will expose and clean up some stuff around here. The DCs and majors all get wiped out. The public would start paying attention again.

JJ lost credibility with tax payers, and they know he has goons under him getting moved up.

    8. I find it interesting that the majority of qualified candidates are W/M. Poor guys will never be promoted in Charlotte. Oddly enough CMPD has been a shit show since the last W/M Chief retired.

      Delete
    9. You lost me at Captain Colquitt. He isn’t a leader and should not be labeled as one. Prime example is when he was the Captain at D3. A leader does what is right when no one is looking, and makes decisions that sometimes are not favorable. Making no decisions isn’t leadership or putting a blind eye on what is going on, and what needs to be done isn’t leadership.

    1. Ain’t that the TRUTH. Watched it for 20+ years. Officers bitch about their Sgt or whoever is in command, swear they just need to left alone to work.
Once left alone… crime rises and production crashes…. Put in a new command person … everyone loves them, all will be great now… 3 months later they are bitching again.

      Delete
    2. The main ones who bitch and moan are the ones who do nothing but ride numbers and zone check all day. Then they complain about any supervisors who has to step in and tell them how to do their job because they suck at it. Just damn mouth breathers…
