CMPD's Overtime Nightmare

Recently CMPD Command has implemented a new directive to limit overtime within the department.

For taxpayers it is another example knee jerk management rather than leadership and planning and just another example of wasteful spending and endless mismanagement.

But for Officers it is massive screw driver and a no-back hex-head stainless steel SCREW!.

As the FOP letter below outlines this new directive limits overtime to a maximum of 10 hours per seven=day work period and 20 hours with a fourteen-day work period.

The FOP letter also points out to declining morale, increased attrition to other agencies and a growing sense that their well-being is over looked.

Interesting to know that the same staffing concerns voiced two and three years ago are being down played by Command saying that CMPD will soon be fully staffed. As Redford points out the "fully" is based on outdated figures from when Charlotte had fewer resident.

It also clearly discounts upcoming retirements and transfers to other agencies.

As CP has pointed out in the past CMPD is woefully understaffed. By comparison Boston PD has more than 2,200 sworn Officer and yet the city population is under 675,000 vs Charlotte's nearly 1,000,000. Which might explain Boston's 2024 homicide count of 36 vs Charlotte's 110.

FOP President Redford asks that the city and department either rescind the discretionary overtime policy or transition the Spectrum Arena traffic management to an off-duty payment system.

Most of us taxpayers are unaware of the role that over-time and secondary employment plays in the lives of our CMPD Officers. But for the vast number of these men and woman these "side gig" assignments offer additional pay that is needed to make ends met, keep the mortgage current, fund their retirement plan and hopefully pay for their kids education.

The other issue is when there's a lack of man power the boots on the ground have to come from somewhere.

So do you see it?

And one more thing..... Let's be careful out there.

  1. Overtime gets a bad name as if it is excessive spending for the same service, it is not. A listed hourly wage does not reflect the 33% in benefits attached to it. So overtime is costing the employer 17% more for an experience, well trained employee. A bargain with the silver lining it is boosting morale.

  2. My coworker almost died because he was working so much overtime. Live within your means and stop excessive spending. People live on $3 a day in Cuba.

  4. Off duty/Overtime were never designed to be an essential and required for an officer. Part of academy was having it explained to officers not to get into a situation where they depended on off duty money to meet their financial obligations. Yes the cost of living has increased, no raises aren’t as big but are season tickets to football games, beach homes, boats, lake homes, gun collections necessary for life. If you are living beyond your means that’s not the cities fault.

  5. How to tank morale #305,001:

Tell officers that want to work OT that they can’t. Tell officers who are on a scheduled day off to come in and work for a billionaire’s sports team.

CMPD can’t stop stepping on its own balls.

    1. Keep in mind, if you call sick for an off duty job, that they forced upon you, on your scheduled day off, they can’t do a damn thing!

  6. Overtime will have to be permanently figured in to CMPD and CFD budgets. It will be a continual issue. They struggle to get enough for a recruit class. Gone are the days people stay 25-30 years. CMPD, like CFD has far more civil service firefighters in admin positions and not in the streets where they belong. They take from operations to fill admin positions and don’t back fill the positions.
